Leave Type

What is Leave Type?

Leave Types refer to the different categories of time off that an employee can avail of, as per an organization’s leave policy. These leaves are typically categorized based on the reasons or situations for which employees take time off. Here are the common types of leave:

  • Sick Leave (Medical Leave): Leave granted when an employee is unwell or requires medical treatment. It is usually paid and may require a medical certificate.

  • Casual Leave: Leave granted for short periods to address personal matters, such as emergencies or urgent family issues. It is typically a limited number of days per year.

  • Annual Leave (Earned Leave/Privileged Leave): Leave accumulated over time, typically based on the length of service, which employees can use for personal holidays or rest.

  • Maternity Leave: Leave granted to female employees for childbirth and post-delivery recovery. The duration varies by country but is generally a few months.

  • Paternity Leave: Leave granted to male employees to support their partner during childbirth and to care for their newborn.

  • Bereavement Leave: Leave given to an employee in the event of the death of a close family member, allowing them to grieve and attend funeral services.

  • Compensatory Leave (Comp-off): Leave provided to employees for extra hours worked beyond regular hours, often in lieu of overtime pay.

  • Unpaid Leave: Leave taken when employees have exhausted their paid leave or when they are not entitled to paid leave, and they don’t receive any salary during the leave period.

  • Public Holidays: Leave granted on nationally recognized holidays, such as Independence Day, Republic Day, or other public holidays observed by the company.

  • Festive Holidays: Leave granted for holidays related to religious or cultural festivals, such as Diwali, Christmas, or Eid.

  • Menstrual Leave: Leave offered to women to manage menstrual pain and discomfort during their monthly cycle. This is a new and emerging type of leave in some companies.

  • Quarantine Leave: Leave provided to employees who are required to stay in quarantine due to health concerns like an infectious disease or pandemic.

  • Birthday Leave: A day off granted to employees to celebrate their birthday.

  • Anniversary Leave: Leave provided on the occasion of an employee’s wedding anniversary.

These leave types help ensure employees have time for various personal and family-related events and health concerns while balancing their work responsibilities.
