Holidays

What is Holidays ?

In India, company-recognized and government-designated holidays are days when employees are entitled to take time off with full pay. The following points describe how holidays are typically handled:

  1. National Holidays: The three national holidays observed across India are:

    • 26th January (Republic Day)

    • 15th August (Independence Day)

    • 2nd October (Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday) These holidays are compulsory, and all employees are entitled to time off on these dates.

  2. Alternate Day Off: If an employee is required to work on a holiday, they are usually compensated with an alternate day off or overtime pay, depending on the company's policy. This is often the case for employees whose jobs may require them to work on holidays.

  3. Weekly Holidays: Most commercial establishments in India observe Sunday as a weekly holiday. This is considered a compulsory holiday. In some cases, if a holiday falls on an employee's normal day off (for instance, Sunday), the company may provide an alternate day off at a convenient time.

  4. State-Specific Holidays: Besides national holidays, companies may also offer state-specific holidays. The number and types of these holidays vary depending on the importance of the day in the specific state.

  5. Company Holiday Policy: Companies typically decide on the number of holidays they offer, which may range from 10 to 20 days annually. These holidays are determined based on the importance of certain days and the needs of the business.

In summary, holidays in India are a mix of mandatory national holidays, state-specific holidays, and company-chosen holidays, with flexibility offered when employees are required to work on these days.
